"In 1969 Kit Siang was detained under the Internal Security Act for 18 months. Ten years later he was convicted of five charges under Official Secrets Act for exposing an inappropriate arms deal between the government and a Swiss company. He was again a victim of the Internal Security Act in Operation Lallang in 1987 and was held without trial for 17 months."
Nelson Mandela, the Father of South Africa
Mandela's words, "The struggle is my life," are not to be taken lightly. Imprisoned for 27 years, his resolve and belief remained unshaken. His daughter grew up without a father, and when he returned, he became the father of the nation.
Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of Non-Violence
Imprisoned for 2 years.
Struggled for life.
Assassinated by a political fanatic.
Aung San Suu Kyi
Put under house arrest since 1989. She was offered freedom if she would leave the country, but she refused. When her husband Michael Aris, a British citizen, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997, the Burmese government denied him an entry visa. Aung San Suu Kyi remained in Burma, and never again saw her husband, who died in March 1999. She remains separated from their children, who remain in the United Kingdom.
Martin Luther King
became the focus of white hatred.
house bombed. church bombed.
Jailed. Assasinated.
do you have the courage to advocate and stand up for what you believe? can you bear to sacrifice 27 years of freedom? live in separation from family? assaults and insults from your opponents? bomb and death threats?
do you want to live for Truth, Justice and Humanity?
can you die for these causes?
for now, i do not know whether i can do what these noble fighters did.
but i feel the calling. i feel it.
when i am teaching at the motivation workshops my team organised recently..
when i see the students, the parents, the teachers, the principals, the chairmans..
when i get to know yingting's family, meisheng's family...
when i look at my own family...
i want them to lead a better life, to be treated more fairly, to grow up and enjoy life, to have no worry over security and safety, to have no fear of being robbed or raped..
i want to strive, not only for myself, but for my family, my friends, my friend's family, my future wife, sons and daughters, and all other brothers and sisters.
yes i have this ambition. but whether i can put this ambition into actuality is a challenge.
who knows one day i may get disillusioned by all the politics, and decide to retreat to living a simple and happy life.
most people at his passionate youth have so many dreams and aspirations.
but whether this fire will last, is the question.
"At that moment I experienced the presence of the Divine as I had never experienced Him before. It seemed as though I could hear the quiet assurance of an inner voice saying: "Stand up for righteousness, stand up for truth; and God will be at your side forever."Martin Luther King in Stride Toward Freedom
